Shodo Calligraphy
with Mayumi Soeda
Friday, December 6th
1:00 - 3:00 pmPlease join us for an introduction to the art of Shodo Japanese calligraphy. Instructor Mayumi Soeda will guide participants through all the basics, including and introduction to tools and equipment, simple brush movements and foundational stroke-making. All materials will be provided and no prior experience is necessary.
About your instructor:
Mayumi Soeda is a native of Nagasaki, Japan and is visiting the United States as a Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator through The Japan Foundation and Laurasian Institution. She is being hosted by Arching Oaks Art and Culture Center in Eustis where she is helping the organization to grow its community outreach programs that help build relationships between our two cultures. Mayumi San is a Japanese calligraphy instructor (Shodo) with a 5th Dan level of expertise in calligraphy with a Level 2 achievement in the Kanji Proficiency Exam.Non-Members $50 Members $45

Digital Painting

Wednesday, December 4th (1 day)
9:00 am - 1:00 pmThrough exercises students will learn the basics of digital art, including vocabulary, tools, gaining hands-on experience and be exposed to the many possibilities and techniques that this media allows.
The digital media is appropriate for students with drawing/painting/collaging experience that would like to add an extra edge to their creations trying a new encompassing media as well as for students with limited drawing/painting hand capabilities.
No previous experience is required and all materials will be provided.

Family Ornaments

Exploring Watercolor

Mondays, January 6th-27th (4 weeks)
6:00 pm-8:00pmCome and explore watercolor! Watercolor has an undeserved reputation for being a difficult medium. But if you learn the proper techniques as a basic foundation, the opportunities to explore and enjoy it are boundless! The instructor will demo several times each class, and the pace is relaxed and enjoyable. Towards the end of the session, you will be able to paint complete paintings.
Jackii Molsick, Instructor, has had over 25 years of experience in painting watercolor. She is a Signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society, and the Whiskey Painters of America. She enjoys helping others discover the magical properties of painting in watercolor.

Richard Colvin is a painter and printmaker with a long career in museums and art centers. His work is mostly traditional, oil and acrylic.

10 am - 12 pmPractice the foundation of every art practice: drawing! Use the skills of drawing value, shapes, line and form, to improve your art beyond the drawing pad, but in every other medium you explore. Build your confidence and find ease in the process of putting pencil to paper.

Intro to Ceramics

Mondays, January 6th-27th (4 weeks)
10am-1:00 pmLearn the intricacies of turning clay into ceramics and why it is important in the modern day, in this beginner level class. Over the course of 4 weeks, you will learn various hand building techniques and use of professional equipment to create functional boxes, vessels, and pots from greenware, to glazed and fired artworks.
Robin Serna is an artist and ceramic instructor with experience at the Kimberly Miller Studios in Leesburg.

Wheel Throwing

Tuesdays, January 7th-28th (4 weeks)
10:00 am - 1:00 pmLevel: Beginner. Learn how to throw on the wheel! All materials provided.
Week 1+2: Learn the fundamentals and techniques of centering and pulling the walls of cups and bowls. Week 3: Trim vessels and add handles if needed. Week 4: After bisque firing, we will glaze our pieces to be glaze fired. Pick-up date will be scheduled after week 4 is completed.

Line and Wash Watercolor

Wed-Thur, Jan 22nd - 23rd (2 days)
9:30 am - 4:30 pm (7hr)Line and Wash was once a popular method of creating a watercolor painting. Artists have used a variety of tools from sticks to wire to create lines with ink prior to painting. The drawing tool in this class is a wooden match, placed into a holder.
The two days will also cover color mixing, and applications for watercolor using different consistencies like Tea, Coffee, Milk, Cream, and Butter. A shape profile drawing will be provided for transferring the image to the paper. The color palette will consist of the three primary colors, using Cadmium Red Light, Prussian Blue, and Cadmium Yellow Medium.

Scratchboard

Level: Beginner
This convenient medium is portable, easy to work with, and most of all, pet portraits are absolutely stunning! Using an image of a cat’s head, you will learn to transfer the image to a piece of scratchboard. Use a scratch tool to scratch away the top black layer of ink to reveal the white clay underneath. The more you scratch, the better highlights you get, and the more realistic your portrait becomes. Once finished, you can leave it in black-and-white, or you can color it using special inks.*all materials provided
